Sample registration data as recently released by Registrar General of India, states that for every 1000 infants born 56 will loose their lives before their first birthday. As per the data Madhya Pradesh has infant mortality rate of 56 per 1000. Their has been drop of 3 points from last year, which shows some improvement, but still State has the highest infant mortality rates in India.
One of the challenge the latest IMR data shows is that the girl children continue to be more vulnerable in the state as well as across the country. The IMR for girls the state stands at 59 per 1,000 live births compared to 54 for the boys. Rural girls are much more susceptible with 62 out of 1,000 girls dying before age of one year compared to 61 boys. The average IMR for in the country is 44 compared to 41 for the boys.
